What makes a favourite shot? That is personal to every one of us. I decided to begin a series of posts of “Favourite Shots” and giving reasons why they are favourites to me.
I posted the shot below in the Bloemenmarkt post. I had been wondering what was so familiar, before it clicked, another shot. Since then I thought about posting shots of mine that I really like. We should all really like all our work, but it’s a bit like friends, you like them all, but some of them have that extra something that makes you like them more. Also you like them more for different reasons. Another thing with friends is that someone you like for a certain reason, someone else may not like for that same reason. So in some ways photography is like friendship. You can still be my friend even if you don’t like what I like, just be honest.
Here’s the shot:
I was sitting outside Starbucks at the entrance to the Bloemenmarkt. It was quite narrow as there are shops and cafe’s on one side with their tables and wares outside, and on the other the flower stalls that are floating on the canal. I had my D7000 in hand, and although there were a lot of people walking through, at times too many. With sitting down you need a bit of room to get the shot. Along to the side at a shop a couple of doors away I saw a blonde girl. She was very pretty and just stood out. I got 2 shots quickly as someone moved out of the way then the line of sight was blocked with people.
When I uploaded the shot to the computer I was very pleased with both shots. I chose this one. It is almost identical to the other, but in this one the back of another person is slightly further over. I cropped the other person out and also a small amount of the top to give a better shape to the photograph rather than being square. I then converted it to Black & White to go with the rest of the post. All the time I was doing this I was irked because there was something familiar and I couldn’t pin it down. Then it hit me that the angle of the head was the same as the candid I had shot of Demi, Stranger #7 in my 100 Strangers Project.
That was not all, there was something else, and that took a bit longer to realise. Then I realised it was mixture of the the pretty face and tilt of the head of the shot of the blonde girl I had taken in Cardiff in January.
Here is another shot of her as she met her boyfriend a few moments later. I hadn’t known it was her boyfriend until a later date when a friend told me. I think you can see her natural beauty.
So that is why this shot “Bloemenmarkt Blonde” is a favourite. A mixture of the girl being very pretty and the angle of her head, which shows the full extent of her neck, and an inquisitive look.
So you can really appreciate her beauty here is the shot in colour.
